The Tanenbaum Institute for Science in Sport and the Saint-Étienne University Hospital Join Forces to Advance Research in Sport and Health

The Tanenbaum Institute for Science in Sport (TISS), supported by the Larry and Judy Tanenbaum Family Foundation, has announced a donation of more than one million euros to the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU) de Saint-Étienne to co-fund an innovative research program at the intersection of sport, health, and medical science.
This contribution, made through TISS, will cover 50% of the funding for a multi-year project led by Professors Pierre Croisille (Head of Radiology) and Pascal Edouard (Head of the Sports Medicine Unit) at the CHU.
The program aims to deepen the scientific understanding of cardiac health and performance among elite and young athletes, combining cutting-edge imaging technologies and applied research to promote safer and more effective training practices. In partnership with AS Saint-Étienne, the project will be piloted and rolled out with the professional squad and the academy teams. It is structured around two complementary applications designed to shift from a primarily curative approach to a predictive model based on data and advanced imaging:
- IPrevApp (AI-powered app – Sports Medicine Unit): an application that estimates an athlete’s daily risk of injury by combining training load, medical history, self-reported fatigue, and other indicators, then provides personalized recommendations to adjust training and prevention protocols.
- DigiLimb (digital twin of the lower limb): individualized virtual replicas built from real data that simulate each athlete’s response to treatment or return-to-play protocols.
The announcement took place in the presence of Mr. Larry Tanenbaum, owner of AS Saint-Étienne, alongside the leadership and Professors Pierre Croisille and Pascal Edouard of the CHU de Saint-Étienne, at L’Étrat, the AS Saint-Étienne training center, symbolically linking this initiative to the region’s strong sporting heritage and its commitment to medical and scientific excellence.

A formal signing ceremony marked the donation in the presence of Mr. Larry Tanenbaum and representatives of the CHU de Saint-Étienne.

L’Institut Tanenbaum pour la Science dans le Sport (TISS), soutenu par Larry et Judy Tanenbaum Family Foundation, annonce une dotation de plus d’un million d’euros au profit du Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU) de Saint-Étienne afin de cofinancer un programme de recherche innovant à la croisée du sport, de la santé et des sciences médicales.
Cette contribution, effectuée via le TISS, couvrira 50 % du financement d’un projet pluriannuel conduit par les professeurs Pierre Croisille (chef du service de radiologie) et Pascal Edouard (responsable de l’unité de médecine du sport) au sein du CHU.
Ce programme vise à approfondir la compréhension scientifique de la santé cardiaque et de la performance des athlètes de haut niveau et des jeunes sportifs, en combinant technologies d’imagerie de pointe et recherche appliquée, pour favoriser des pratiques d’entraînement plus sûres et plus efficaces. En lien avec l’AS Saint-Étienne, le projet sera testé et déployé à titre pilote auprès des équipes professionnelles et de la formation. Il s’articule autour de deux applications complémentaires afin de passer d’une approche essentiellement curative à un standard prédictif fondé sur la donnée et l’imagerie avancée :
- IPrevApp (app IA – Unité de Médecine du Sport) : une application qui estime chaque jour le risque de blessure en combinant charge d’entraînement, antécédents, fatigue auto-déclarée, etc., puis délivre des recommandations personnalisées pour adapter l’entraînement et la prévention.
- DigiLimb (jumeau numérique du membre inférieur) : des répliques virtuelles individualisées construites à partir de données réelles permettant de simuler la réponse de chaque athlète à un traitement ou à un protocole de retour au sport.
Cette annonce a été faite, en présence de M. Larry Tanenbaum, propriétaire de l’ASSE, et la gouvernance du CHU de Saint-Etienne et les Professeurs Croisille et Edouard du CHU de Saint-Étienne, depuis le Centre Sportif Robert-Herbin à l’Etrat, centre d’entraînement de l’AS Saint-Étienne, lieu symbolique ancré dans un territoire où la culture sportive et l’excellence médicale se rejoignent.
